Finally understood why certain lipstick shades aged me and which ones actually work

You know that feeling when you put on a lipstick and immediately look... tired? Like you aged five years in the bathroom mirror?

I'm 42, and for the longest time I thought it was just me. That I couldn't pull off certain colors anymore because I'm getting older. My daughter would wear a bright coral and look fresh and fun, but when I tried the same shade, I looked washed out and somehow older than I actually am.

For years, I stuck to nudes and soft pinks because they felt safe. But honestly? I was bored. I missed feeling like I could wear color without second-guessing myself.

A few months ago, I went down a rabbit hole about color theory and seasonal color analysis. I'd heard about it before but always thought it was one of those things only celebrities with personal stylists cared about. Turns out, it's actually pretty simple, it's about understanding your natural coloring (skin tone, undertones, hair, eyes) and finding which color families make you look more vibrant versus drained.

I didn't want to spend a fortune on an in-person consultation some charge $250+, so I looked for online options. Found this tool called color-analysis.pro., where you upload photos and it analyzes which colors suit you best. It's AI-based, so I was a little skeptical at first, but figured it was worth a shot.

Uploaded a few photos in natural light, no makeup, just my regular face. Got my results back pretty quickly, turns out I'm a soft autumn. Which explained everything.

The reds and pinks I'd been avoiding? Those were actually in my palette. But not the cool-toned, blue-based ones I kept trying. I needed warm, muted tones, terracotta, warm rose, soft brick red. The bright fuchsia I'd worn in my 20s? That was aging me because it clashed with my natural warmth.

I went through my makeup drawer after that and it was like everything clicked. The lipsticks I never wore? All cool-toned. The ones I reached for constantly? Warm and soft.

Now when I shop for makeup, I actually know what to look for. I'm not just guessing or buying what's trending. And honestly, I feel like I look better now than when I was playing it safe with boring nudes.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Did figuring out your colors change how you approach makeup as you've gotten older? Or am I overthinking this whole thing?
